Multiplying and dividing fractions

Multiplying and dividing fractions is also very easy. We simply multiply the numerators to get the numerator of the answer, and multiply the denominators to get the denominator of the answer.

-  ×   -  =      -------  =   -

2      4           2 × 4        8

The sutra for dividing by a fraction is Transpose and adjust. the application of this turns the second fraction up-side-down and change the ÷ sign to a ×  

3       2            3       5        15            7

-   ÷   -    =      -   ×  -   =   --   = 1  --

4       5            4       2         8             8

We simply cross-multiply and put the first product over the second product. 

     5           1        12      4              48                 16                          2       

 1 -    ×  1  -  =  --  ×   -    =      ---   =   --   =               - =   2    -    

    7           3         7       3               21                7                           7      

The mixed numbers are first expressed as improper fraction ( you  can use cancellation method )

3 -   ÷ 5 =  3  -   ÷  -  =  --  ×  -    =   -
