Placing Fractions in Order of Size
Fractions can be placed in order of size using proportionately.
Example place order of the size the following fraction
2 5 5 2×6= 12 5×3=15 5×2 =10
- - - = ------------ --------- -------------
3 6 9 3×6= 18 6×3=18 9×2 =18
12 15 10 5 2 5
__ __ __ _ _ _
18 18 18 9 3 6
1) LCM of the denominator 3,6 and 9 is 18. multiply up the fraction accordingly so that they all have the same denominator.
2) compare them and rewrite them in the size order with the smallest first
Same Numerator
Another method which can be used is to make the numerators the same instead of the denominators .
Example: place these fractions in order of size
5 3 10 5×6=30 3×10=30 10×3=30
- - -- ---------- ---------- -----------
12 8 23 12×6=72 8×10=80 23×3=69
1. the LCM of 5,3 and 10 is 30;
2. Inspect the fraction to see which denominator is the largest it is smaller so 30/80 means 3/8 is is smaller and 30/69 means 10/23 is larger ( smallest denominator is largest value; Largest Denominator smallest value)
3 5 10
- - --
8 12 23
