What is a sequence?
A sequence is a list of numbers that follow a pattern.
What is a linear sequence?
A linear sequence is a list of numbers that increases or decreases by the same
amount each time.
Example 1: Increase
11, 14 ,17,20,23,26...
The differences for the number pattern
11 | 14 | 17 | 20 | 23 | 26 | ... |
are | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
the next number is 29, 32..( add 3 to the next number )
Example 2: Decrease
18, 16, 14, 12, 10, ...
-2 -2 -2 -2 -2
-2 the last number then you will get the next number 8, 6,4...
if the pattern difference is not same then you can use the following trick
Example 3 : 3, 7, 15, 27, 43, ...., .... , ....
3, 7, 15, 27, 43 ...., .... , ....
4 8 12 16 20
so the next number is 63,( 20+43) ; 87( 63+24) ; 115(87+28)
( How to find N term we will learn in next level)
Exercise: Find out next two terms of the following terms
- 7,13,19,25,31,...
- 2,7,12,17,22,27,...
- 34, 56, 78, 100, 122, .
- 1, 20, 39, 58, 77, ...
- 1, 6, 11, , 21, 26, 31
- 5, 10, 17, 26...
